On Valentine’s Day, I-70 Community Hospital hosted approximately 40 ladies to a “Heart Healthy Lunch”. The meal prepared by dietary staff included a green salad, salmon with baked sweet potatoes and chocolate covered strawberries.
Registered Dietician Jana Fuehring an employee at the hospital spoke to the ladies regarding eating for both a healthy heart and a healthy mind. For a healthy heart she stressed the importance of; limiting unhealthy fats and cholesterol as well as sodium (salt), eating lean protein, more fruits, vegetables and whole grain foods, controlling your portion size, planning ahead and allowing yourself an occasional treat. Foods which help to promote healthy brain aging are berries, walnuts, leafy greens, fish and heart-healthy fats such as olive oil.
Jana holds a Master’s Degree in Dietetics from the University of Kansas Medical Center and has been working in dietetics for over 10 years. In addition to working at I-70 Community Hospital Jana is also a Clinical Dietician at Saint Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City. There she specializes in heart disease with a primary focus on patients undergoing heart transplant and coronary bypass surgery.
I-70 Community Hospital has hosted the women’s luncheon for the past 7 years on or around Valentine’s Day. Make your plans now to attend next year’s event!
